In his widely discussed Medical Nihilism (2018), Cambridge philosopher Jacob Stegenga argues that "we should have little confidence in the effectiveness of medical interventions." While, according to Stegenga, in recent years journalists and physicians have shown a huge influence of financial interests on the results of medical research, it is less clear how the methods of medical research allow for these influences: "As a philosopher of science, this is my focus: I argue that the methods of medical research are malleable, and such malleability contributes to exaggerated claims of effectiveness of medical interventions."In this seminar, we'll read essential parts of Medical Nihilism as well as related papers, classical and recent, in the growing field of philosophy of medicine.
