Inhalt
Aesthetics is the study of beauty and of the conditions of our appreciation of the beautiful. It is also supposed to provide the foundation of our concept of art, help us understand the connection of truth and semblance, and of beauty and (moral) goodness, thus bordering on both the disciplines of epistemology and practical philosophy. But why should a theory just recognize beauty? What makes something beautiful? Aesthetics is a murky creature, as it is hard even to define its proper content, the range of its application, and its similarity with mere subjectivism.In this course, we will problematize the notion of “beauty” and think about the conditions and implications of “aesthetic appreciation”. We will also investigate into the concepts of sublimity and ugliness as borderline cases, as well as reflect on the conditions that make something artistically relevant. Main sources will be from German and anglophone philosophy, starting in the 18th up to the 21st century. Additionally, as this seems a must for a course questioning the nature of art, we will examine the revealed criteria and modes of judging by applying them to some works which are generally referred to as works of art – and to some which might (or should?) be counted out.
