Inhalt

Computer simulations have become indispensable tools in the natural and social sciences and engineering. They are applied to everything from astrophysics and climate modeling to economics and epidemiology. However, their rapid integration into the scientific toolkit raises profound philosophical questions. This seminar examines the nature and epistemological status of computer simulations, exploring how they challenge, extend, or redefine traditional scientific methodologies.

Although computer simulations are widely recognized as essential scientific resources, their precise philosophical classification is still debated. Throughout the seminar, we will trace the evolution of the philosophical literature on simulations. Initially, simulations were viewed as mere extensions of mathematical modeling practices. Subsequently, they were reframed as unique forms of experimentation. Now, they are increasingly treated as complex technical artifacts and novel instruments of science.
