Inhalt
This is, on the one hand, a typical course on Existentialism, understood as a philosophical school of thought as predominantly practiced at the beginning of the 20th century - even though major figures in Existentialism had always been wary of the label as such. We will look into the origins of existential thought, and then proceed to discuss a selection of official key texts in Existentialism. Texts span from Nietzsche’s Gay Science, Andreas-Salome’s The Erotic to Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, and proceeds to existentialist classics by Heidegger, Camus, Sartre, and de Beauvoir, but will also cover newer ground by Irvin Yalom and others.On the other hand, this course takes seriously the claim that existentialism is not 'really' philosophy, but literature - or at least a mixture of both. Key issues have been raised in literature first; and it seems that quite some of them are only solvable in literature as well. We will look at Goethe’s Faust, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Kafka, Camus, et. al.
This course requires the ability and willingness to read critically and carefully, and to allow oneself to deal with ideas that feel personal in a professional way.
